Memorial’s Dr. Brian Veitch appointed to prestigious Board of Directors

St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador – The Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland is proud one its professors and associate deans has been appointed to the Research & Development Corporation’s (RDC) Board of Directors.

Dr. Brian Veitch, Professor, Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering and Associate Dean of Research, was appointed to the board as a director on Aug. 31. His appointment pleases Dr. Ramachandran Venkatesan, Dean pro tempore, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University.

“Dr. Veitch is very deserving of his appointment to the RDC Board of Directors. He is a very active researcher and makes outstanding contributions to applied research projects in ocean engineering,” said Dr. Venkatesan. “Dr. Veitch is also an alumnus of Memorial University, having graduated from our undergraduate co-op engineering program in 1988 and our Master of Engineering degree in 1990. It is rewarding to see how far he has progressed and the respect he has earned throughout his career.”

Small Business Innovation Research, Technology Infrastructure Can Help Create Jobs

WASHINGTON (9 September 2011) — To help encourage job growth, Congress should reauthorize the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program and invest in America’s technology infrastructure.

During his speech to Congress last night, President Barack Obama specifically cited small businesses as a key to job creation. “Everyone here knows that small businesses are where most new jobs begin,” Obama said. “And you know that while corporate profits have come roaring back, smaller companies haven’t.”

One simple way that Congress can immediately help small technology companies is by passing a long-term SBIR reauthorization.

SBIR is a competitive, federally funded program that helps small companies conduct research into new technology. But because Congress has failed to pass a long-term SBIR reauthorization, companies cannot be sure of the program’s reliability.   Read the rest of this article » » »

Dr. Angus A. Bruneau to be inducted into Order of Newfoundland and Labrador

Founding dean of Memorial University’s Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science recognized for his efforts and vision

St. John’s, NL – The founding dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland has been recognized with the highest honour bestowed by the province.

Dr. Angus A. Bruneau (OC, Ph.D, P.Eng) has been inducted into the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador, as announced by Lt.-Gov. John Crosbie on Aug. 22. The Order of Newfoundland and Labrador recognizes individuals who have demonstrated excellence and achievement in any field of endeavour benefiting Newfoundland and Labrador and its residents in an outstanding manner.
