National Hydropower Association

The National Hydropower Association (NHA) is a nonprofit national association dedicated exclusively to advancing the interests of the hydropower industry. It seeks to secure hydropower’s place as a climate-friendly, renewable and reliable energy source that serves national environmental and energy policy objectives.  Engineers can visit their web site at http://www.hydro.org/.

NHA works to unite the diverse North American hydropower community, providing an advocacy voice among U.S. decision makers, the general public and the international community. Through membership, individuals and organizations have an opportunity to gain access to regulatory bodies, influence over energy and environmental policy and a means to exchange valuable information with one’s peers.

The NHA was founded in 1983.  They report that they represent 61 percent of domestic, non-federal hydroelectric capacity and nearly 80,000 megawatts overall in North America.  The NHA membership consists of more than 140 organizations including public utilities, investor owned utilities, independent power producers, equipment manufacturers, environmental and engineering consultants and attorneys.

A friend has no problem getting electricity from flowing water on his land. He wants to know if it’ possible to mechanically transfer the water at the end of this process into energy, since it’s stored in a container following the operation
