Review:
This short book (just over 100 pages of content – and the pages are small and they use a very large font) can be read quickly and easily. The authors are trying to pass along what they have learned from their observations and research. It is meant to be practical knowledge that the reader can put into practice on a daily basis. The concepts are presented using examples and experiences – as an unfolding story. Four basic leadership styles are defined and discussed: 1) DIRECTING, 2) COACHING, 3) SUPPORTING, 4) DELEGATING. One point made is that “Everyone has peak performance – you just need to know where they are coming from and meet them there.” So the book outlines the relationship between development levels and leadership styles.
Another outstanding quote from this book is “When the best leader’s work is done, the people say ‘We did it ourselves!’”
Also discussed are the three secrets of One Minute Management: 1) GOALS, 2) PRAISINGS, and 3) REPRIMANDS.
This book is a quick way to help you think about your situational management skills, and to put some new techniques into practice.
From the Author, Ken Blanchard:
“My thought is to write a series of One Minute Manager books with some of the most creative and innovative management thinkers in the country. My hope is that some day a manager will be sitting at a desk wondering what the One Minute Manager has to say about a topic such as decision-making, time management, leadership, listening, delegating, team building, managing groups, and influencing upward, and all he or she will have to do is wheel around and pull from the shelf a One Minute Manager book on that subject.”
From the Publisher:
“The third book in the extraordinary One Minute Manager series goes straight to the heart of management as it describes the effective, adaptive styles of Situational Leadership. In clear, simple terms it shows why “nothing is so unequal as the equal treatment of unequals,” why it teaches you how to become a flexible and successful leader. The authors describe why you must fit your style to the needs of the individual; how to diagnose a situation correctly so you know when to delegate, support, or direct; how to contract with your people for the leadership style that suits them best. And you will see just how the good leader consistently uses the One Minute techniques to enhance the management and motivation of others. This remarkable, easy-to-follow book – the next important step in One Minute Management – is an invaluable guide to the creative and one-to-one leadership that works for you and the prosperity of your entire company.”
