AIAA SALUTES WORLD SPACE WEEK
October 7, 2009 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) salutes the remarkable benefits that space exploration, science, and technology have provided to people everywhere, in celebration of World Space Week, October 4–10, 2009.
AIAA President David Thompson observed: “As commercial satellites and other space technologies have become pervasive in the everyday lives of people around the world, from satellite TV broadcasting and automotive GPS navigation to business data networking and space-based weather monitoring and Earth imaging, space systems have contributed much that has become indispensable to our modern lives. I hope people throughout the world will take time this week to join in the international celebration of everything that space exploration, science, and technology has done to make our world a better one.”
World Space Week was created by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999 to “celebrate each year at the international level the contributions of space science and technology to the betterment of the human condition.” Each year over fifty nations organize events involving space agencies, schools, aerospace companies, planetariums, museums, astronomy clubs, and other interested groups to celebrate the week.
AIAA is the world’s largest technical society dedicated to the global aerospace profession. With more than 35,000 individual members worldwide, and 90 corporate members, AIAA brings together industry, academia, and government to advance engineering and science in aviation, space, and defense.
