How Much to Keep PE License?
How much will I need to spend to keep my PE License each year?
There are two components to the answer to this question:
- Fees
- Continuing Education
Fees
The fees are those charged by your jurisdiction (i.e. state) to maintain your “active” status as a licensed professional engineer. These may be collected annually or bi-annually. Some examples of these yearly fees are as follows:
- California $62.50
- Colorado $63
- Connecticut $225
- Georgia $25
- Illinois $30
- Massachusetts $40
- North Dakota $75
- Texas $200 (possible exemptions)
Continuing Education
Currently there are thirty-two states that require continuing professional competency (CPC) for Licensed Professional Engineers. For specific information regarding your CPC requirements check with your state of licensure.
The states can impose various requirements in regard the engineering continuing education. Some are very strict, requiring pre-approval of continuing education sponsors and detailed recordkeeping & reporting. Other states may simply require the individual engineer to keep records themselves, and may only check these records under special circumstances.
So the cost of this continuing education can thus vary. For some, on-line free courses may enable you to meet your required educational needs. For others, they may need to purchase training from approved vendors. And of course your employer may also cover these costs. So you may spend nothing to hundreds, even thousands of dollars.

I thought that I dodged a bullet when I found out that CA doesn’t require any PDH’s. But then I recently applied for a Nevada license and although I do have an NCEES license the process was still long and expensive..
And they do require PDH’s!…. Woe is me..
