Professional Land Surveyor

Similar to becoming a licensed professional engineer, is becoming licensed as a professional surveyor (P.S.). The process is similar; however the second exam in the licensure process is the Principles and Practice of Surveying (PS). This exam is offered in April and October.

Once you are granted licensure by your jurisdiction, you may use the distinguished designation “professional surveyor,” or P.S. Some jurisdictions use other titles signifying the same expertise, for example, Professional Surveyor and Mapper (P.S.M.), Land Surveyor (L.S.), or Professional Land Surveyor (P.L.S.).

There are many resources for the professional surveyor.  The National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS) provides “the platform by which members can share their thoughts and opinions about our common interests through business meetings /committees, regional groups, and student chapters. It also provides a forum for input from other groups such as the National Association of County Surveyors, members of state boards of registration, and the Forum for State Surveying Society Executives.”

Another resource is The American Surveyor – a monthly magazine that is a publication of Cheves Media LLC.

On-line resources, such as the TEST YOURSELF section http://www.amerisurv.com/content/view/3883/150/  that includes many questions that are similar to those of the NCEES land surveying exams.

They include on the web site product and software reviews.  You can also subscribe to their email newsletter or read their blog.  You may be interested in their historic map reproduction gallery they offer for sale.

Another resource is the Professional Surveyor Magazine.  This magazine (and web site) published by Reed Business Geo, Inc. covers all aspects of land and hydrographic surveying, targeting professionals in the surveying, mapping, engineering, GIS, and related geomatics fields.

They state their objective as follows, “Our mission is to connect surveying methodologies from the past with the ever-changing technologies guiding the industry today. We do this with a variety of feature stories, columns, editorials, and advertisements. Diverse articles include case histories about successful surveying applications and cover new technology, people in the business, trends, and developments.”
