Changing the Message
NSPE President Brad Aldrich, P.E., F.NSPE makes some good points in his recent blog entry “Changing the Message“
When engineers talk to others about engineering we often convey a negative message about the profession. As Mr. Aldrich states, “How many of us have said, “It’s a very tough degree” or “You really need to be good in math and science,” or my personal favorite, “Only one in three who start in engineering will graduate with an engineering degree”? I know I’m guilty!”
So it is good that organizations such as NSPE and other engineering groups are trying to improve the perception. Four key messages have been crafted by them to properly portray engineering in the 21st century. They are:
- “Engineers make a world of difference.”
- “Engineers are creative problem-solvers.”
- “Engineers help shape the future.”
- “Engineering is essential to our health, happiness and safety.”
So, let’s, as professional engineers, do what we can to put forth these messages when interacting with others, especially students and those who might someday themselves be engineers.
