The Engineering Income & Salary Survey

The NSPE recently posted this news release: Amid Concerns Over Engineering Shortages, U.S. Engineers Get Some Good News

Noteworthy statements included:

“…recent data from The Engineering Income & Salary Survey, median salaries for engineers are up over ten percent from 2006, and up more than 19 percent from 2005″

“…there will be an increased demand for engineers in the future…”

“With 2007 being the 100th anniversary of engineering licensure, licensed professional engineers (PEs) are also receiving good news, with a significant increase in their salaries…”

“In addition to the increase over last year, PEs also earned 24 percent more than engineers with no license or certification.”

The online survey, produced in partnership between NSPE and ASCE, is a constantly changing database in which participants can add or update data year round as salaries change.  They indicate that salary data is trended forward so reports generated from the system are always current.

An individual engineer may submit their salary data even if they are not an NSPE member. They suggest that engineers update their data when their salary information changes or at least once per year. A free individualized report summary (for your engineering level and geographic region) is available to all who participate in this year’s survey. This is good since it should increase participation and thus allow them to provide more statistically valid data.

So, I decided to take the survey.  Click here for the engineering salary survey web site.

The survey consisted of 5 pages of questions:

  •             Page 1: general info - specific field, education, experience, licensure, supervisory capacity
  •             Page 2: professional level - engineer level I - VIII
  •             Page 3: salary data - base, bonus
  •             Page 4: benefits - medical, insurance, etc.
  •             Page 5: employer info & employment status

The complimentary report was provided when I completed the survey.  It provided salary data for my engineering level and region of the country that I work in.  The information was interesting and useful.
