The NCEES runs the web site http://www.engineeringlicense.com/.  It provides a good overview and history of professional engineering, as well as information regarding the FE and PE tests.  It also has a page to answer the question, “Why bother with licensure?”.  They state that, “This path will lead you to higher wages, better opportunities, and a higher level of respect and credibility among your engineering peers.”
